ONCE upon a time...There
was a king who asked each of his subjects to pour one glass of
milk in his well, for the welfare of the kingdom. Each subject
thought, "If I put a glass of water instead of milk, it
will hardly make a difference with so many glasses of milk that
others will pour." The next morning, the King found the
well filled with only water and no milk.
Since last few years
there has been rampant environmental degradation. Beginning with
littering of roads and many
aesthetic assaults that we witness on a daily basis. These
unfavourable changes in our surroundings have created discomfort
in our normal lives. It is not as simple as it sounds, as the
levels of environment have deteriorated alarmingly!
One of the
main concerns in metros has been cutting
down of trees. Trees help in recycling oxygen and the number
of people dependant on trees has far outnumbered the required
deadline! On an average, we smoke equivalent of 40 cigarettes
a day. To maintain our oxygen balance each of us requires 5
trees and the ration is, 26 Mumbaikars are dependant on only
a single tree! Along with air pollution, the increased decibel
levels of noise have already taken us to a point of annoyance
and aggression. We risk becoming partially or total deaf
citizens, due to the high noise levels.
Meanwhile, the other
menace faced by most citizens is un-cleared garbage. Most of
us yet do not separate wet and dry garbage
and to add to this problem, the slack in pace of Municipal
sweepers, who often leave the garbage un-cleared. The situation
is so severe that garbage does not get cleared for days, which
leads to foul smell and increase of insects and often has been
the cause of spreading epidemics in certain pockets of the
city.
The picture is not too beautiful, but this is exactly
the situation in our city, however the future is not bleak.
It
is in our hands to make us breathe cleaner air and have a better
environment. If we recycle our renewable and non-renewable
resources then we can have a less polluted world where people
will be healthier, live longer and have: greater material wealth.
But the onus is on us to take the efforts and they are very
simple to follow. Eco-caring can arrest the environmental stress
that affects the realms of ecology.
Following environmental
principles of "respect your roots", "individuals
matter" and "principle of wastes are potential resources" will
ensure that the situation can change.
Life style changes in
our daily situations can make a difference:
» |
Close the taps while brushing your teeth. |
» |
Carry cloth bags instead of plastic bags.
|
» |
Do not litter your surroundings and separate garbage
into two compartments. "dry" (plastics, paper,
metal, glass) and "wet" (food waste) |
» |
Walk wherever possible and avoid using any vehicle |
» |
Consciously switch off light and Fans when not required |
» |
Wrap gifts with newspaper instead of gift papers or wrapping
papers. |
» |
Spread the message to whomsoever possible |
» |
Re-use paper / envelopes |
So join the wave and make the difference by caring for My
Earth.
