Project 'Let's Deal With E-waste' - Ver 2.0

The E-Waste Menace – Threat or Opportunity?

How many times in the last year did you buy a new gadget? Upgraded your phone? Bought a new note pad or laptop? Invested in that giant television you always wanted? What did you do with the old gadgets?

The magnitude of E – Waste generated in India alone can be summed up by the "Global E –Waste Monitor 2014", compiled by UN think tank the United Nations University (UNU). Our country is the fifth largest E – Waste producer in the world, generating 1.7 million tonnes of waste every year out of the world's total production of 41.8 million tonnes.

Currently, India’s E – Waste mostly comes from televisions, followed by desktop computers. But India is still young in its experience with smartphones – a fast growing industry. The worst of the E – Waste menace is yet to come!

So while modern technology has made our world more comfortable than our cave dwelling ancestors could ever imagine, it has not been without substantial impact on the planet and human health. Millions of electronics are discarded every year. They find themselves piled up like mountains in landfills. What no one realises is that all E – Waste contains of hazardous and precious elements which leach in to surrounding soil and contaminate ground water coming right back into our food and water.

The UN report disclosed that every year, around USD 52 billion worth of recyclable E – waste is dissipated. The reports states “An astounding 300 tonnes of gold, equal to 11 percent of the aggregate worldwide gold generation in 2013, could have been extricated from the heap of Electronic Waste in an ecologically amicable way.”

OASIS and Sony Music India are initiating a long term programme to achieve E – Waste Awareness and creating E – Responsible citizens. The aim is to reach out to thousands of individuals through the schools of Mumbai using innovative methods of contests, workshops, and dance & drama presentations. The program will be conducted in schools from July to November and finally culminate into an awareness event in the month of December.

The youth and children of today stand to benefit the most from understanding that they could be the ones facing the reality of a poisoned planet stripped of many of its natural resources in the future. They are the best catalysts and agents of transformation. Igniting their minds by catching them young is the best insurance that our current future generations will behave “E –Responsibly” rather than irresponsibly.
