Tree Plantation – Conservation Through The Ecosystem Approach
Tata Motors + OASIS + Ladybird
Tree plantation is considered to be the only option when it comes to creating green cover. However, not many use the ecosystem approach. Ecosystem approach helps in creating habitats that promotes overall biodiversity as it includes plantation of trees, shrubs, herbs and climbers.
When trees are planted in unison to provide feeding and breeding grounds for insects, small mammals, reptiles, amphibians and birds, it creates habitats that promote local biodiversity. Thus, a planned approach in choosing location, species of plants ensures that tree plantation is not happening just for the sake of it.
TATA Motors in association with OASIS and Ladybird Environmental Consulting LLP have undertaken a project to plant a total of 24,000 saplings which will be cared for, for the next three years across various locations in and around Mumbai. A set of 25 plant species will be used which will include around 40 % of tree species, 50% of shrubs and 10% of herbs at each site.
While the plantation activity itself will be conducted across the next 2 months, studies on plant survival and the growth of biodiversity at various sites will be monitored till March 2018. Additionally, butterfly awareness programs will be conducted across schools, wherein students will visit the plantation sites to receive hands-on learning about Tree Plantation – Conservation Through The Ecosystem Approach.
To kick off the project, work began at Maharashtra Nature Park, Dharavi, on 2 March 2015 and was completed on 20th March 2015 to celebrate World Forestry Day.
